Bulletproof coffee, a mixture of café crème, a good chunk of butter and a dash of coconut oil, is becoming increasingly popular, and not just among figure-conscious people. Although butter and oil are very high in fat, in this form they are said to help with weight loss, boost energy and improve concentration. And in extreme situations, many people turn to this extra portion of energy and concentration.

Its four secrets could lie in yak milk

Secret 1: The idea comes from Tibet
In Tibet, in the mountainous regions of Nepal, in Bhutan and in the far north of India, butter tea, i.e. tea with butter made from yak milk, is drunk. The origins of this drink go back to the 7th century. This buttered tea made from tea leaves, butter and salt serves the Sherpas as an energy store in the cold and is one of their staple foods. In Tibet, this butter tea, Po Cha, is considered the national drink. To prepare it, tea leaves are boiled in water - sometimes for up to half a day. The hot tea is then poured over salted yak butter and mixed with it by pounding. Butter tea is traditionally drunk at breakfast, usually from small bowls.
From Tibet via the USA to the whole world
Dave Asprey discovered Tibetan butter tea during a stay in Tibet. Back in the USA, he used it to develop Bulletproof Coffee and the Bulletproof Diet. Today, Bulletproof Coffee stands for many types of coffee with extra power.
The long-chain fatty acids from the butter are only slowly absorbed in the intestine, while the medium-chain fatty acids from the MCT oil are already absorbed in the stomach. They therefore enter the body more quickly and also provide energy faster.

Secret 2: Preparation is very simple
Only a few ingredients are needed to make an original Bulletproof Coffee:
a large cup of café crème with a high caffeine content
one to two tablespoons of pasture butter
one to two tablespoons of MCT oil (MCT stands for "Medium Chain Triglycerides", i.e. medium-chain fatty acids. Medium-chain fatty acids are contained in coconut oil, rapeseed oil or appropriately labelled oils)
stir for 20 seconds and the Bulletproof Coffee is ready to drink. The ingredients must be stirred until frothy, as this is the only way to combine the fats from the butter and oil with the coffee. If the ingredients are not mixed well, the Bulletproof Coffee will leave a distinctly unpleasant flavour in the mouth.
Very important: the following ingredients have no place in Bulletproof Coffee: soya milk, margarine, sugar or sweeteners.

Secret 3: Literally a bomb
A cup of Bulletproof Coffee has a good 250 to 400 calories and up to 30 grams of fat. Many athletes and nutrition professionals swear by this quick and energising breakfast. Others can't see anything good about Bulletproof Coffee. They ask: Who drinks a cup of whipped cream for breakfast in the morning?
Is Bulletproof Coffee a miracle weapon?
Its advocates claim that it makes you slim. Low carbohydrates, high protein and fat are nothing new. It is more or less based on the principles of the Atkins diet, a highly controversial diet in which the body cannot store calories in the fat depot without carbohydrates and sugar. Ultimately, Bulletproof Coffee is also another form of low carb diet. However, it not only makes you slim, but also fit. The combination of caffeine and medium-chain fatty acids is undoubtedly a real energy booster. Caffeine remains in the body for a particularly long time with Bulletproof Coffee, while the medium-chain fatty acids provide an energy boost.
Why is it also called keto coffee?
Sceptics, including many nutritionists, agree. Bulletproof coffee is no substitute for a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. And drinking coffee with butter is only recommended if you are a Sherpa in Tibet and need a lot of energy quickly for mountain climbing. However, this is rarely the case in our latitudes.
The inventor of Bulletproof Coffee, Dave Asprey, added his drink to a whole range of other weight loss tips and tricks early on. Bulletproof coffee is one of many components for successful intermittent fasting and targeted ketogenic diets.

Secret 4: Self-test
What's the story behind this miracle cure? Does it banish my hunger for many hours and do I then make wiser, healthier and calorie-reduced decisions throughout the day? And do I really feel fitter and more present after my Bulletproof Coffee?
I prepare myself for my self-experiment. Pasture butter, coconut oil, a large cup and a mixing bowl are ready. I brew a strong café crème in the mixing cup and add the butter and coconut oil.
I mix for 20 seconds...
...and then dare to drink my first Bulletproof Coffee.

There are many variations of Bulletproof Coffee
Bulletproof coffee is often prepared with coconut oil (instead of MCT oil), as in the self-experiment. This gives the Bulletproof Coffee a soft and lip-smacking flavour.
A frothy Bulletproof Coffee can be prepared by adding 2 tablespoons of unsweetened coconut or almond milk.
Bulletproof coffee with pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg. The original recipe is supplemented with unsweetened coconut milk, a little pumpkin puree, a pinch of salt and cinnamon and nutmeg to flavour.
Speculoos Bulletproof Coffee. A teaspoon of speculoos spice is added to the Bulletproof Coffee.
